Russian initiative on compact neutron source DARIA

The report presents the idea of a compact accelerator-driven neutron source designed mostly for condensed matter research and intended to replace the medium- and low-power reactors used for these studies. Formulated is a general approach to design and construction of a neutron scattering instrument on a compact source. On this basis we describe the appearances of the required accelerator and target assembly. Taking examples of neutron scattering methods – diffraction, reflectometry, small-angle scattering and SESANS – the science cases for such source is discussed and solutions to design these instruments are proposed.
