1. Level (Type) of work:

Qualifying graduate thesis/Master thesis.

2. Topic:

Study of cluster formation processes in a glass matrix doped with titanium and cerium oxides.

3. Work objective:

Investigation of structure and morphology of clusters in a glass matrix by small-angle neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction, determination of structural parameters and an average size of clusters. Analysis of interrelation of optical properties of glasses with changing morphology of Ti-Ce-O clusters.

4. Short description:

One of the most topical problems in modern physics of condensed matter is the study of structure of nanocomposite materials by various physical and chemical methods, in particular, by crystallographic techniques, with the aim of determining their structure in detail. Silicate glasses with ions of transitive and rare-earth elements are important representatives of such materials. These glasses are promising materials for optical and electronic industry. Products made of such glasses have a high level of protection against ultraviolet radiation and high thermal stability. Glasses doped with titanium and cerium dioxides are bright yellow in color and are actively used for production of optical filters, bulbs of automobile lamps and artificial jewelry. It is believed that high temperature stability of the color of these glasses is due to formation of stable Ti-Ce-O clusters in them. To study the structure and form of these clusters in relation to concentration ratios of TiO2/CeO2 it is planned to carry out experiments on small-angle neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction.
