1. Level (Type) of work:

Qualifying graduate thesis/Master thesis.

2. Topic:

Study of phases in lipid membranes under high hydrostatic pressures.

3.Work objective:

Study of structural changes in lipid membrane solutions under high hydrostatic pressures by small-angle neutron scattering and volumetric techniques. Analysis and establishment of regularities of transitions, construction of phase diagrams.

4. Short description:

Investigation of phase transitions in lipid membranes in water solutions under changes of hydrostatic pressure is a poorly explored field of scientific research. Small-angle neutron scattering investigations of phase transitions in lipid membranes at pressures of up to 2 kbar were realized at the YuMO spectrometer (IBR-2 reactor, JINR, Dubna). A device allowing volumetric measurements to be performed was developed and constructed on the basis of a high hydrostatic pressure facility. Test measurements were carried out with the device. It is planned to continue measurements and to analyze data obtained by means of two techniques.

5. Basic facilities and software:

Small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer YuMO, small-angle X-ray instruments, high hydrostatic pressure facility for volumetric measurements, experimental data treatment software (SAS), Fitter.
