1. Level (Type) of work: Qualifying graduate thesis/Master thesis.

 

2. Topic: Nondestructive elemental analysis of samples on the IREN neutron beam using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy.

 

3. Work objective: Study of features of elemental composition of rare and unique samples without their damage or destruction, which is unavoidable in a usual elemental analysis with the use of sample activation under neutron irradiation in a reactor channel, in the process of their delivery to a measuring position and during gamma-spectroscopy of induced activity.

 

4. Short description: Resonance structure of energy dependence of neutron radiative capture cross-section has characteristic features for each element and makes it possible not only to reveal its presence in a sample under study but also to determine the content of this element in it. This becomes possible in the measurements of energy dependence of gamma-quantum yield from a sample placed in a neutron beam by a high efficiency liquid gamma-detector using time-of-flight technique for measuring the energy of the neutron captured by the sample.

 

5. Basic facilities and software: Large liquid gamma-detector on a 60-m flight path of channel ?3 of the IREN neutron source, TOF – measuring module, PC – program "TOF".

 

6. Results: Measurement of time-of-flight spectrum for gamma-quanta of radiative neutron capture in a specified time interval and interpretation of the obtained experimental data.
